If you have not submitted your levy request or certified levies to Meade County,
please ensure you do so on or before October 1st.
Are you selling a vehicle or trailer?
Prior to the final handshake of your sale, please make sure you take the license plates off the vehicle or trailer. The Meade County Treasurer’s office sees daily repercussion because your plates are still attached to the sold vehicle.
When you purchase license plates from the Meade County Treasurer office, those plates belong to you. Not taking them off makes you liable for fines.
Such as, toll booth charges, parking fines and towing fines committed by the purchaser will be your responsibility unless you can prove otherwise, and that process can take months and not to mention the possibility of a credit rate ping.
To allow the buyer time to get plates, you can provide a “seller’s permit” with the title and the bill of sale. In the State of South Dakota, a seller’s permit gives the new owner 45 days to get into their County Treasurer’s office to title and license.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the staff at the Meade County Treasurer's office 605.347.5871.
