General Statement of Duties
Under the direct supervision of the Sheriff, is responsible for administering the implementation and operation of the Communication Center, the effective delivery of public safety telecommunications (911) for all residents within the jurisdiction of Meade County, and is responsible for performing general and administrative duties to include, but not limited to: personnel administration, assistance in budget preparation and control, policy preparation and implementation, etc.
Hours of Work
This position is a non-exempt position normally scheduled for 40 hours per week. Actual hours may vary. This position is subject to assisting other Meade County departments at the discretion of the Department Head.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Plan, organize, direct, and coordinate all activities of Meade County Telecommunications.
Assure the prompt and effective implementation of the 911 Public Safety Telecommunications System.
Oversee, schedule and delegate duties of the Communication Center personnel.
Oversee performance, quality control, training and disciplinary action ( does not hire or fire).
Responsible for the day-to-day operations and the procedures of the Communication Center.
Assist with dispatching, telephone operations and computer data entry.
Prepare and maintain Standard Operational Procedures manual for the Communication Center.
Maintain the enforcement of security, in conjunction with the Meade County Sheriff , with respect to the dissemination of information handled in the Communication Center.
Provide public awareness information regarding the Meade County Communication Center and 911 Service.
Attend training sessions and meetings as required.
Perform duties in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies.
Perform other such duties and functions as deemed necessary.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Education:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certification.
Three (3) years’ experience in Communications/Dispatching or an equivalent of education and experience may be acceptable.
Ability to be certified in Medical Priority Dispatch and CPR.
Ability to be certified in Teletype.
Demonstration of the knowledge of Federal Communications Agency regulations.
Knowledgeable experience in dispatching (fire, ambulance, law enforcement, etc.), hazardous materials and standard operational procedures.
No prior felony criminal record.
Ability to demonstrate good communication skills.
Ability to maintain a professional relationship with the interdepartmental and associated agencies, general public and other employees.
Ability to train others.
Ability to demonstrate familiarity with geographical areas to the extent that they can direct field units to a scene in a timely manner.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.
The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.
The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 10 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
The employee must work various shifts as assigned, which may include weekends and holidays.
Ability to function effectively under stressful conditions.
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Examination, Testing, and Certification:
Valid certification in Medical Priority Dispatch, CPR and Teletype.
Successful competition in written and/or oral interviews.
Other such examination as deemed appropriate and necessary by the Sheriff and/or County.
