General Statement of Duties

Under the direct supervision of the Highway Superintendent and general supervision of the Assistant Highway Superintendent, is responsible for skilled construction, maintenance and repair work on County roads, related facilities and equipment.  Operate any type of equipment over 26,000 lbs.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate and perform minor repairs to a variety of vehicles including but not limited to - trucks, dozers, pay-loaders, scrapers, motor graders, tractors, and trailers all used in the repair of County roads and bridges.
  • Participate with work crews in all aspects of highway maintenance to include asphalt repair, patching, sealing, overlay, crack filling, roller and oiler.
  • Coordinate operation and maintain section gravel roads to include blading and pulling shoulders, and maintaining ditches and roadways by cutting edges and mowing.
  • Repair County roads and bridges to include loading and unloading materials, fencing, crack filling and picking up litter as needed.
  • Remove snow during inclement weather.
  • Assist in loading and hauling of dirt, gravel, snow and other materials.
  • Mow grass in County roadway ditches as needed.
  • Clean and/or assist in draining ditches.
  • Maintain records of work performed.
  • Perform duties in a manner consistent with safe practices.
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment when required.
  • Attend meetings and seminars as assigned.
  • Perform other such duties and functions as deemed necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  1. High School diploma or G.E.D. certification.
  2. One (1) year of experience in operating trucks, heavy/light equipment and tools associated with construction.
  3. Currently possess or ability to obtain a valid South Dakota Class A Commercial Drivers License with air brake and tanker endorsements.
  4. Broad knowledge of procedures, techniques, and standards applicable to highway and roadway maintenance and construction.
  5. Proficiency in the use of a wide variety of shop tools.
  6. Ability to work unsupervised.
  7. Ability to work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
  8. Ability to work well with others and get along with the general public.

Road Construction On Elk Vale Road

The new preliminary construction start date for the Elk Vale Road Project is May 29th.  The road will be closed to all traffic until the completion of the project, which is anticipated to be in August 2018.  Landowners and local traffic should retain access.  For additional information, contact the Meade County Highway Department at 347-4565.

The project is a total re-grade of Elk Vale Road from Elk Creek Road down to the Pennington County Line (a total of six miles), and it will have an interim blotter surface until paving, which is anticipated to commence May 2019.

2018 Election Information

April 24, 2018

To accommodate the voters of Meade County in the upcoming June 5th, 2018 Primary Election we are relocating the Sturgis Community Center polling place for the following precincts:

East Sturgis #1, Northeast #1A, Southeast Sturgis #2, South Sturgis #2A, Central Sturgis #3, West Sturgis #4, Southwest Sturgis #4A, Northwest Sturgis #5, Sturgis #5A, Tilford #6, Rural Sturgis #7, Harmony #8, Bear Butte #9.

The new location will be in the west gym at the Sturgis Brown High School, 12930 SD Highway 34, Sturgis SD.  This is due to the Sturgis Community Center being booked for another event.  While we know relocating can be confusing, we are making the move as easy as possible with the setup in the west gym exactly like the Sturgis Community Center.  Precinct tables/workers will have the same arrangement as in the Community Center.  Large signs will be hung overhead to direct you to your polling precinct.  We will still have information workers available at the high school if you are not sure where to go.  Your vote, your privacy, ease of movement within the facility and parking are important to us, which is why the move was made for this primary election. 

Also, to make the transition easier before you head to the polls, did you know you can see a sample ballot on line?  If you would like to vote early, absentee voting started April 20th at the Meade County Auditor’s Office located at 1300 Sherman Street, Sturgis SD.  The office is open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or you can request an absentee ballot to be mailed to you by filling out the application and mail it back to us.  It is that easy! 

The November 6th, 2018 General Election will be moved back to the Sturgis Community Center and we will be working with the City of Sturgis on future contracts to have the polling place stay at the Community Center.

Under the direct supervision of the Jail Administrator, is responsible for operating the control console to monitor and control various functions of Meade County’s sheriff and correctional operations and to provide guidance and direction to personnel.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

Control Room Operator

  1. Observe monitor screens that transmit in sequence views of the sheriff and correctional operations.
  2. Operate control board to stop and maintain surveillance of location where incident is developing.
  3. Telephone appropriate personnel or other designated agency to notify authorities of disruptive activity.
  4. Watch Correctional Officers to ensure safety and maintain peace while they are working with inmates.
  5. Open secured doors to authorized personnel and public to enter and/or exit correctional facilities.
  6. Adjust monitor controls when required to improve reception, and notify repair service of equipment malfunctions.
  7. Log and enter daily events into computer.
  8. Serve as a backup office receptionist answering the telephone, and radio traffic and greeting individuals.  Answer questions and direct individuals to the appropriate personnel.
  9. Prepare reports.
  10. Attend training, seminars and workshops as deemed necessary.
  11. Wear Personal Protective Equipment as deemed necessary.
  12. Perform duties in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies.
  13. Perform other such duties and functions as deemed necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Education:

High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certification.

  1. Minimum one (1) year secretarial experience preferred.
  2. Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment to include typewriter, copy machine, fax machine, computer, etc.
  3. Knowledge with law enforcement a plus.
  4. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  5. Ability to demonstrate good communication skills, written and oral.
  6. Ability to maintain a professional relationship with the general public and other employees.
  7. Ability to demonstrate good organizational skills.
