STATE IMPLEMENTING NEW MOTOR VEHICLE LICENSING PROCEDURE

4A817216-7EE1-4EC8-B9BF-51514A2368F0_4_5005_c.jpeg

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, September 22, 2021
CONTACT: Robin Shrake, Treasurer at: 605.347.5871

Sturgis, SD -  Meade County Treasurer Robin Shrake today urged county residents, who have motor vehicle licenses expiring in November, to purchase their tags early.  Residents affected will be those whose last name begins with T through Z.  Shrake said, “The South Dakota Division of Motor Vehicles is implementing a new computer software system that is going live on Monday, November 29.”

This is the first time since 2008 the state has changed its computerized licensing procedure. Most residents are unaware that at the time they purchase their licenses at their local treasurer’s office this transaction is simultaneously interacting with the state’s computer system in Pierre.  Although state officials are confident in the new system, they expect it could pose some time delays because it is interconnected with hundreds of users all across the state.

“Time is important for all of us. The busiest time at the treasurer’s office is always the first few days and the last couple of days of the month.  With the state implementing this new system on Monday, November 29 (which follows the long Thanksgiving weekend) there could most likely be time delays. The Meade treasurer’s office is here to serve the public and we will stay until the last customer has their licenses.”  Of note some residents do purchase tags at a kiosk in Rapid City or Spearfish.  These satellite locations will not be operational during the conversion time.

Meade County Hazard Mitigation Plan - DRAFT Version

Natural hazard mitigation is defined as any cost-effective action that has the effect of reducing or preventing risk to people, property, and infrastructure caused by natural hazards. Mitigation measures fall into three categories: 1) measures that keep the hazard away from people, property, and structures; 2) measures that keep people, property, and structures away from the hazard; and 3) measures that do not address the hazard but rather reduce the impact of the hazard on the victims, such as insurance.

The Hazard Mitigation Plan is an update of the 2016 Meade County pre-disaster Mitigation Plan. The purpose of this Mitigation Plan update is to ensure that Meade County’s strategies to reduce risks to people and property from hazard events are relevant and effective. This plan is a major revision of the 2016 plan and is in compliance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) latest Local Mitigation Planning Guidance and the requirements of the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000. Through the development and adoption of this plan, Meade County, Faith, Summerset, Piedmont, and Sturgis are eligible for FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Programs.
