Information for Veterans
Veteran job training
The transition from military to civilian life is a challenge for veterans. Many veterans don’t have the support network or resources needed for a successful transition. The results are overwhelmingly high rates of veteran suicide, depression, homelessness, incarceration, and substance abuse.
Meade County FireWise provides a landing spot for veterans and offers assistance with this transition. We strive to establish a sense of brotherhood similar to that had in the service. Veterans come to the program with different skills and different goals—but their military values are the same.
Veterans are hired to the program on a short-term basis and trained in fire safe practices to complete hazardous fuels reduction work. While on the program, they also receive assistance finding a career in the field of their choosing. The program is flexible to meet each veteran “where they are” in their search for employment. Veterans spend work time each week in the office working toward their career goals. Former veteran hires have left the program to pursue careers in a variety of fields including: firefighting, IT technician, correctional officer, EMT, heavy equipment operation, and law enforcement.
